INT. HANGAR DECK – THE PEQUOD – DAY
JULY 8, 2012
The hangar deck is filled with military leaders
from all around the world who have come on board the Pequod to learn
more about the success of the vaccination against the Furiae Virus.
Many have come from far and wide to also hear the military plans that
have been circulating around each sea colony about how to win control
of the planet again. Amongst these military leaders are also individuals
who want to help who have no military experience. Men and women from
around the world are here to learn more about what they can do to
At the front of the crowed, lifted by a little
stage are Knowle, Doggett, Captain Scully and Dr. Montgomery. All
are dressed formally to address the crowd – Doggett and Knowle in
their formals, along with Captain Scully. Dr. Montgomery in a suit
Scully is in the front row of the crowd, paying
close attention to their speeches as they each address the crowd.
Behind her are Mulder and Krycek who sit quietly, paying attention.
Monica is on the other side of the crowd, away from Scully, Mulder
We join this assembly already in progress as
Captain Scully wraps up his opening speech.
... and I’d like to thank you all
again for making the journey here today.
He turns to look at Dr. Montgomery and nods
Now Dr. Montgomery will discuss
the success rate of the vaccination.
John Montgomery steps up and takes center stage.
Thank you Captain. (beat) The reports
have been coming back these past few
months from our people out in the field.
The success rate is very positive. It is
estimated that ninety percent of the Breeders
have had a full recovery. (beat) I’ve been
monitoring each recovery station closely
and have been talking with Generals Doggett
and Rohrer about getting them military ready.
We’re thinking that if we start training
now we should be ready to an attack by December.
He continues on, but we go into the crowd and
find Monica, sitting alone, listening closely.
Oh wow, this is very good news.
Hearing the sound of her grandmother’s voice
startles her. She passed away nearly six years ago before the aliens
even colonized the planet. She looks over at her with wide eyes.
What? Why are you so shocked to see me?
(beat) Oh you must be thinking this
is some part of your brain deteriorating,
but it’s not – well, it is, but that’s not
why you are seeing me now.
Grandmama smiles at Monica.
Monica looks around, is she the only one seeing
a dead woman?
Yes, you are the only one seeing
a dead woman. Which I rather resent
that you would think of me as a “dead
woman” when you know very well that I
believe in life after death.
(very quiet whisper)
What are you doing here?
Doggett takes center stage to address the crowd
about plans he and Knowle have been working on for the past few months.
I’m always here. Well, not really
but every once in a while I like
to pop in and see how things are
going. (beat) I was there when Katie
was born. I laughed at Mulder and
Krycek being tied up. I was there
when you and Knowle got married – and
don’t worry, I left so you would have
a wedding night all alone.
Grandmama winks and smiles at her. Monica is
about to speak, but Grandmama stops her before she can.
Shh... you don’t want to look insane
by talking to the empty seat next to
you. You’ve already caught the attention
of a few people. (beat) We should talk somewhere else.
Grandmama stands up and starts to walk away.
When Monica doesn’t follow, Grandmama turns around and waves to her
Monica quietly leaves, hoping to be discreet
in her exit, but Knowle notices her from the stage. But he can’t leave,
he’s up next to address the procedure to train men and women for the
planned attack on the Hybrids.
INT. STAIRWAY JUST OUTSIDE THE HANGAR DECK –
Monica has followed her Grandmama out into one
of the stairwells that is currently empty.
This is much better.
Why are you appearing to me now?
Well... someone has to be around
for when your time comes.
Don’t play dumb with me, you can’t
hide your illness from the dead.
You know, we know all on this side.
(beat) You are dying, Monica. That
is why I’m here, to help you find
the other side.
Monica’s heart skips a beat. She’s going to
be dying soon is what her grandmother is telling her. She’s about
to tell her that she doesn’t accept this, when...
Acceptance or no, your time is
fast approaching. (beat) And don’t
worry... Scully is on to you, remember
she had this cancer herself, she knows
the signs. She’s seen the rapid memory loss.
I can’t, Grandmama. I’m not ready.
Few are lucky to be ready when
they bite the big one. This is
why I have come. You see, I have
become a Helper on the Other Side.
It’s quite fun really, you get to
help all your loved one’s who have
passed. Like when you miscarried a
couple months ago – I was there!
Are you smiling at my misery?!
This is not misery, Monica. It is
a part of life.
I think you’ve forgotten that the
living still have feelings!
I have not forgotten! You have forgotten
that I’ve always been this way.
She smiles again.
Oh Monica, if only you wouldn’t be fearing
this. You see, over here we have everyone!
Brad is here, your parents – biological and
adopted. Your pet fish, Petie – you remember
him, don’t you? He was the one that Carlos let
loose in the creek and you cried because you
thought you would never see him again. It’s when
you first met John and Knowle. Remember?
Monica can’t believe what she’s hearing. There’s
too much left in life, she can’t be leaving it so soon.
I... I can’t, Grandmama...
Like it or not, Death is coming for
you. But this is not why I came here
right now – you aren’t croaking yet.
I came here to ease your soul into
acceptance. You see, your soul is dying
prematurely because of a great sacrifice
you made years ago. You saved the life
of Dana, and because of this, you gave her
and John a new life with their daughter
Katie. But there is so much that you will
be missing in your own life. This saddens me,
but I am here to ease this sadness.
I can’t do this, Grandmama. I have to
get back to the assembly.
Monica quickly turns to get away from her Grandmama.
(from behind her)
Like it or not, you can’t hide from me.
Monica continues, not looking back, wanting
to forget what her Grandmama is telling her.
SUDDENLY! Grandmama appears right in front of
Monica lets out a scream, startled by her Grandmama’s
Stop haunting me!
Grandmama smiles and looks behind Monica at
Monica turns around to see Shannon and smiles,
as if she wasn’t just yelling at the air to “stop haunting” her.
Everything all right? You
don’t look so good.
What? I’m fine.
Your nose is bleeding, hon’.
Monica hadn’t even noticed.
GRANDMAMA REYES (V.O.)
(inside Monica’s head)
Ooooh... I’m a ghost inside your head... Ooooh...
Monica tries her best to focus on Shannon and
not hear Grandmama in her head. And it’s not like she can cover her
ears and make it stop.
It’s just the damn cold.
GRANDMAMA REYES (V.O.)
(inside Monica’s head)
She doesn’t believe you.
Monica tries her best to hide her irritation.
Are you sure? Year ago it didn’t
bother you so much. What’s up?
Stress, that’s all. You know with
how Knowle and all this military...
Monica trails off, forgetting mid-thought what
she was saying.
And all this military...?
Monica looks up at her, a little confused about
what they are talking about?
GRANDMAMA REYES (V.O.)
(inside Monica’s head)
You are loosing your memory,
Monica. You will soon be at peace.
You were saying you were stressed.
That’s why you are having nosebleeds.
Shannon watches her suspiciously. She can recall
the time Scully was dying of cancer. Her memory went and she had nosebleeds
too. Shannon walks up to Monica.
Can I ask you something about
When you healed Dana all those years
ago, did you take it from her?
Yes, I took it away from her.
And after that, where did it go?
Shannon’s trying to get it out of her. She’s
not one to believe in hocus-pocus, but she’s seen enough to convince
her that there are things in this world that cannot be explained.
It just went away.
I don’t believe you. You see, I
know Knowle well enough to know
when something is wrong, and something’s
not right with him. He’s been distracted
more and more, his mind elsewhere. He’s
been late to military meetings and I
think he’d rather be spending this time
with you because you are dying. (beat)
Did her cancer transfer to you?
Monica doesn’t know what to say. Shannon’s always
been so blunt with people, but she never thought she’d be able to
notice what has been going on.
(after a beat)
You’re thinner, haven’t been eating as
much because you can’t. You get nauseated.
You’re looking tired more and more. And
you can’t recall many conversations you
just finished having. (beat) I know when
Knowle’s heart is breaking. I know when
he is sad, and I know when he’s hiding it
from other people, Monica.
I have to go.
Monica quickly walks away from her. Shannon
watches on, her mind convinced that Monica is dying from the cancer
she took from Scully years ago.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. KNOWLE & MONICA’S KITCHEN – EVENING
Monica sits at the table in their kitchen as
Knowle is cooking up dinner at the stove. Monica is in her own thoughts,
hardly paying attention to what he is saying.
The turn out today was great. We’ve
already started to organize a couple
of fleets. And the volunteer list is
growing faster than we thought.
He turns and looks at Monica and she smiles
weakly at him.
Grandmama Reyes appears across the table from
Are you all right, sweetheart?
He watches her as she stares across the table
He’s surprised you’ve lasted
this long you know.
Monica looks away from her grandmother, wishing
she would just go away.
I’m sorry I missed part of the
Knowle turns down the burner on the stovetop
and comes over to her, kneeling down in front of her.
It’s all right. Are you ok?
I saw Grandmama today.
This surprises him. For years they’ve known
she can see the dead, but she hadn’t for a very long time.
She’s here right now actually.
Sitting across the table from me.
Knowle looks at the chair Grandmama is sitting
in, and all he sees is a chair.
What does she want?
He looks back at Monica and tears fall from
her eyes. Inside, his heart breaks knowing that seeing Grandmama isn’t
a good thing at all. He takes her in his arms and holds her close
She says that she’s here to
take me away. To help me to
the other side, that my time is up.
(whispering, trying not to be intrusive)
Don’t forget that I have some
important things to tell you
to make it easier for you.
Monica looks over at the chair and glares at
her grandmother. She doesn’t need her here to pester her right now.
Grandmama understands the glare and disappears.
She says she wants to help ease
my soul by telling me things I
need to know or something. I don’t
know, but she’s been tormenting me
all day. (beat) I’m not ready, Knowle.
He kisses her on the top of the head and holds
her closer to him as she starts to cry. They both knew this day would
come. Tears fall from his eyes, dropping on her head.
I’m here for you, sweetheart.
Monica wraps her arms around him, not wanting
to ever let go, but knowing that inevitably she will. No one can escape
TIME CUT TO:
INT. KNOWLE & MONICA’S BEDROOM – THAT NIGHT
Knowle is asleep, holding Monica close to him
in his arms. It was a hard night for both of them and took him several
hours to fall asleep. Monica on the other hand can’t sleep. She holds
Knowle’s hand in her’s and watches the time tick by on the clock on
the nightstand. Her eyes are red from crying. All this time she knew
this day would come, but now that it is here, she finds she’s not
I know you are scared, Monica.
Grandmama appears in front of Monica, sitting
on the floor near the bed.
And perhaps I was a bit harsh with
you earlier today. (beat) I’m sorry.
Monica doesn’t respond.
There is something I need to
tell you, before your time on
this planet is over...
You must leave this ship. You
must go to land tonight.
I can’t do that.
You can and you will. You
have to. The survival of
mankind depends on it.
Monica looks at her for a moment, not understanding.
I know you don’t understand, but
you must trust me. (beat) I was
right about the artifact I gave
you – it saved you all from the aliens.
Now you must listen to me, and trust
me just this one last time.
Where will I go?
You will go beyond the ice cave,
beyond the forest, and to the
mountains that are black... there,
and only there will you find what I speak of.
And this thing will save mankind?
Yes. (beat) I should warn you though...
You may not ever return to this ship.
(beat) Do what you must before you leave,
but you must do it tonight – no exceptions.
Monica looks away from her Grandmama... this
is the end...
I know you are fearing the unknown
that lies ahead of you... but there
is nothing to fear. When you pass
from this life there is another waiting
for you. Another where you are with the
one’s you have lost before. As I told
you, they are all here... waiting for you.
Grandmama rises from the floor and goes up to
Monica, bends down and kisses her on the top of her head.
Now go, and don’t waste time.
Grandmama vanishes. Monica’s heart sinks, but
she slowly removes Knowle’s arm from around her. He stirs and she
places a hand gently on his forehead and he continues his sleep, calmed
slightly by her touch.
She quietly gets out of bed and finds a piece
of paper and begins writing a note. Once finished, she places it on
the nightstand, covering the clock. Knowle’s name is on the folded
She looks over at Knowle as he sleeps, completely
unaware that she is leaving to die tonight. Tears well in her eyes
and she bends down and kisses him on the lips one last time.
INT. PEQUOD’S GYM – THE NEXT MORNING
JULY 9, 2012
Mulder and Krycek stand front and center at
attention. Knowle is sitting at a little desk holding some paper in
his hands. He looks at the paper, but he’s not really looking at them.
He’s lost in his own thoughts about Monica – confused that she left
in the middle of the night. He found her note this morning, but his
mind has not been able to wrap around her words.
Mulder and Krycek, wearing identical work out
clothing of gray sweatpants and white t-shirts, look over at him.
They see how glum he is and share a look.
Is he going to train us for combat or what?
That’s why we’re here.
He looks so sad.
Yeah. Maybe he needs a Wookie
Hug like Han did in “Return of
the Jedi” after he is sent to
the prison cell at Jabba’s.
Maybe. But who do we know
who is furry enough?
Mulder gives him a look. Duh, you don’t have
to be furry to give a great big Wookie Hug to a friend in need.
Krycek reads his expression, then nods his head,
Right. I forgot. Wookie Hugs
can be given by anyone.
Should we go over there and give him one?
Totally. Look how bummed he is.
Mulder and Krycek look to one another and nod
their heads. Yeah, the big guy needs a Wookie Hug. They walk over
to where Knowle is sitting and without warning they both wrap their
arms around him and hug him with their Wookie Hug.
Much to Alex’s surprise, Knowle doesn’t push
them away. Mulder rests his head on the top of Knowle’s.
There, there, buddy. Everything
is going to be a-okay.
Tears well in Knowle’s eyes as Mulder kisses
him on the top of the head.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. PEQUOD MESS HALL – LUNCH TIME – SAME DAY
Doggett, Scully, Marita and Maria are sitting
at one table together with trays of food in front of each of them.
Doggett drinks from a milk carton as the rest watch him eagerly. He
sets the carton down.
(already in the middle of something)
I thought it odd too, but I guess
with all the training Knowle’s been
assigned to he wouldn’t have time to
open up the restaurant today.
I stopped by Monica’s classroom today
and she wasn’t there. Jennifer was
subbing for her instead – didn’t know
what happened, but no one has seen her.
Maybe she needed to help Knowle whip
the boys into shape. I hear they were
scheduled to meet with him this morning.
Sometimes they do need a little
looking after, don’t they?
They sure do.
Scully’s been quiet through all of this. What
the other’s don’t know, and what she hasn’t had time to talk to Doggett
about, was that she had a conversation with Shannon earlier today
about her concerns for Monica’s health. The nosebleeds, how ill she
started looking, and now Monica is missing. Scully looks up from her
plate of food and sees Mulder and Krycek coming over to their table.
Speak of the Ewoks... here they come now.
Mulder and Krycek sit down at the table. Mulder
kisses Marita on the cheek and Krycek kisses Maria on the cheek. They’ve
screwed up their girlfriends. Marita and Maria share a knowing look
and smile with amusement.
So how was training with Knowle
this morning, boys?
He looks them over. No sweat stains on their
shirts. Not a hair out of place. He looks at them confused.
You did remember to go, right?
Knowle was bummed. We gave him
a Wookie Hug and he started to
cry, then called the day off saying
he had some other more important
military issues to deal with.
Doggett is puzzled. But his puzzlement soon
turns to suspicion...
(not trusting Krycek)
You boys didn’t tie him up
and lock him in a closet did you?
No. We were actually gung-ho about
getting trained, but... He just wasn’t
himself today. He seemed really down.
Scully, as if snapped out of her own thoughts
turns to Doggett and touches him on the arm.
John, can I talk to you alone?
Scully gets up and leaves the table. Doggett
looks to the others and shrugs, gets up and follows.
Krycek turns to Maria, who he thinks is Marita.
So baby, we gettin’ together tonight.
Maria smiles and looks at Marita, who nods her
I’m Snuggums, remember.
Right. Yes, Snuggums.
Krycek smiles and turns back to his meal. Maria
gives Marita look of “that was close”. Mulder notices, then realizes
he and Krycek got confused on which one was which.
Meanwhile, Doggett has caught up with Scully
outside of the mess hall in a quiet corner of the hallway.
What is it?
I think I may have an idea
about what’s going on with Knowle.
She takes a deep breath, not sure how to let
him know what she and Shannon were talking about. He motions for her
You’ve noticed how she’s been
lately. Forgetting things easily,
always looking a little under the
weather. (beat) Nosebleeds.
Are you saying she has cancer?
I don’t think it’s just any
cancer, John. I think she has
the cancer that I had years ago.
I was talking with Shannon earlier
today and she thinks that when Monica
healed me that she took my illness
and that it’s inside of her now.
How could that be?
I’m a scientist John and I can’t
explain what happened back then,
but it did happen. I’m cured. I
had Katie. What happened to me
was a miracle that challenges
what science has taught me. (beat)
We’ve seen things, John, that we
can’t explain. Everything that
Shannon was telling me is... it
very likely could be true.
Doggett allows this to sink in.
I’ll find him and talk to him,
see if I can’t get it out of him.
(beat) Would there be anything
we could do to help her?
Scully looks at him and her eyes say it all
– there is nothing that can save her.
I wish there was, but there isn’t.
Doggett nods his head.
I’ll go talk to him.
He turns and leaves.
INT. KNOWLE & MONICA’S LIVING QUARTERS
Knowle sits on the couch holding the note Monica
wrote him in his hands. He stares at her handwriting, her words, trying
to take them all in, trying to take this whole situation in. Why did
this have to happen to her?
A knock on the door interrupts his thoughts.
He looks up, but doesn’t make any attempt to get up and answer the
door. He looks down at the note again, re-reading her words.
The knock comes again.
Knowle, it’s John.
He sounds serious, concerned. Knowle doesn’t
want to face him right now. He hasn’t figure out how to tell him and
everyone that Monica is gone. He just needs to be left alone right
A knock comes again.
Knowle, please open the door.
I need to talk to you. (beat)
You know I can pick locks.
Knowle looks up at the door, not happy. He folds
the note and puts it in his pocket, gets up and opens the door. He
blocks the doorway so Doggett can’t enter.
Doggett sees that his eyes are red from crying.
(after a short beat)
How long has she had cancer?
Knowle doesn’t have the energy to lie to him.
This was all bound to come out sooner or later and Knowle promised
her he would tell them and not put the burden on her.
A little over six months.
Is she here?
No. She left sometime last night.
(beat) Left a note for me saying she
had to go to somewhere because Grandmama
told her she had to... to save me.
Doggett doesn’t understand and his confusion
I don’t know either.
We can set up a search and
rescue party for her. We
can find her, Knowle.
Knowle shakes his head.
You don’t get it John, she’s
not coming back. Her decline...
He shakes his head again, not wanting to continue.
There’s no cure for her John. God
knows we can create a cure for the
goddamn Breeders, but we can’t save
the life of a woman who sacrificed...
You don’t have to say anything,
John. She didn’t want you and
Dana to know. She didn’t want to
break your hearts.
Knowle turns away from him.
I just need to be alone right now.
Doggett nods his head, even though Knowle can’t
I’m sorry, Knowle... I know
how much you love her. If
you need anything from Dana and
I... please let us know.
Knowle doesn’t respond and after a moment Doggett
leaves, quietly shutting the door behind him.
After a moment, Knowle goes over and locks the
door. He turns his back to the door and his heart breaks, and breaking
with him is the strength has left to stand and he lowers himself to
the ground. With tears in his eyes he hangs his head and allows the
emotions he’s been concealing flow. He cries for the loss of his best
friend and wife.
EXT. BLACK MOUNTAIN, NORTH CAROLINA – THAT NIGHT
The night is quiet and still. The snow in front
of Monica is untouched. The moon shines down, lighting her way through
the darkness. Her body is frozen and all she wants to do is stop and
rest. She doesn’t even know what she is looking for and she hasn’t
had contact with her Grandmama since leaving the Pequod late last
night. She stops, her limbs no longer wishing to move and she looks
up to the moon, finding peace and tranquility in the stars above.
She feels the warm blood trickle from her nose. She does nothing to
clean it, what’s the point anyway? She starts to move again, but becomes
dizzy and disoriented. She feels her body weaken and she falls to
the ground, hitting the freshly fallen snow. She drowsily blinks her
eyes and looks in the direction she was headed and sees a dark figure
approaching her. Her vision blurs and her eyes shut. All she hears
are the crunching footsteps in the snow, and then nothing.
SLOW BLUR FADE IN:
INT. DARK CAVE – SAME NIGHT
Monica’s eyes slowly open. The world around
her is blurry. The cave is warmly lit by a fire and she is wrapped
in a warm fur blanket, her head resting on a soft pillow. She looks
over at the fire, which cracks and pops, and she can see the blurry
figure of a man sitting across from her. She blinks her eyes, trying
Who are you? Where am I?
The man rises from the other side of the fire
and goes over to her. She shuts her eyes, exhausted from her journey.
She feels a rough hand touch her forehead and she opens her eyes again.
I’ve been expecting you, Monica.
The voice is familiar to her, from many years
ago. She blinks her eyes and they come into focus just enough for
her to see that the man is none other than the Cigarette-Smoking Man.
She attempts to sit up, shocked to see him. She thought for sure he
was dead. He was taken when the aliens came to take her...
Don’t try to sit up, Monica.
Save your strength, you’ll need it.
She lies back down and looks up at him.
How...? We all thought you were dead...
I should be, but I’m not.
Yes, before I ever got to
their headquarters. (beat)
I’m sorry I wasn’t able to
get you out of there sooner.
His apology is sincere. She feels he is different
from the last time she was with him. Years ago, before the world iced
over, he was using her to get at Scully, using her to get protection
for himself... He even made a deal with the Colonists that if he gave
them Monica, he would be saved. She remembers back to the moment the
aliens took her, she felt the regret he had for betraying her.
Don’t worry about it.
She smiles weakly, but sincerely.
I was saved by other aliens
that helped me.
I’m glad to hear that.
What did you mean when you
said you were expecting me?
Cancer Man smiles at her and sits down near
I thought you would ask. I had
a strange occurrence last night
where I was visited by a woman claiming
to be your grandmother.
Monica is speechless as she waits for him to
She said that I would be able
to help you from a terminal illness.
Did she say how?
That’s typical of Grandmama.
But she said that when I saw
you, that I would know what
she was talking about.
She told me that I had to go to
the mountains that are black and
that when I get there I will find
something that will save mankind.
The Smoking Man raises his eyebrows... as far
as he’s concerned, there’s nothing here that can save mankind.
You don’t know what I’m talking about?
I’m afraid not. I’ve been living
in this cave for five years and
haven’t come across anything that
can save mankind.
Then how are you going to help me?
I’m not sure what terminal illness
you have to be honest, so I’m not sure.
Cancer. The same cancer that Dana
had when she had the chip removed
from her neck at the beginning of
the Colonization War.
Cancer Man looks at her puzzled.
You have this cancer?
She nods her head.
I healed her of all her wounds.
She was dying and I took that
away from her. (beat) I remember
it clearly... we were in battle,
before the world froze, and she
had been shot. I stopped everything
I was doing and had this overwhelming
sensation to come to her aid. (beat)
And all I did was place my hand over
her wounds, over her cancer and she
was back to life.
This doesn’t phase the Smoking Man one bit,
he’s heard of things like this happening before.
The cancer had consumed so much
of her. She wouldn’t have lasted
more than a month is what they
were all thinking. (beat) You
don’t seemed so shocked to hear this.
That’s because I’m not.
He stands up and walks across the cave to an
area resembling a make-shift kitchen. He gets a small bowl and pours
something into it and comes back over to her.
Here, have this.
He helps her sit up and gives her the bowl.
What is it?
Chicken noodle soup. It’s good for the soul.
He smiles at her and she drinks it. The warmth
He sits back down.
I’ve been witness before to aliens
who could heal the wounded.
I’m not alien.
We all are, just some of us are
more human than human. (beat) You’re
a special person higher up on the
evolutionary scale. Your brain and
chemistry work at a higher level than
most humans. Really, what are aliens?
They are a race of beings that are more
advanced than Earthlings both technologically
and biologically. (beat) You’ve been
special since the day you were born.
You, your brother Carlos, your mother and grandmother.
How is it that you know all of this?
Back in my days with the Syndicate
I worked closely with John Montgomery,
who I found out worked closely with
your grandmother. Apparently she had
given him some information about you.
Are you saying that he knew, in some
way, that he needed me at that facility?
Did he know I had the vaccine for the
alien virus inside of me?
I’m not sure what he knew, but
he knew you were special.
How does any of this help
me with my illness.
Dr. Montgomery kept files on all of
his patients. Over the years I’ve
come to discover some of these files.
(beat) Including yours.
Monica waits for him to continue. She nods her
head, wanting him to go on.
(after a beat)
He kept all these files on
microchips – similar to the one
that was pulled from the base
of Dana’s neck. (beat) She’s had
this cancer before, many years ago.
I helped Mulder find the cure – this
chip – and it saved her life.
Are you saying you have this chip for me?
Monica’s heart skips a beat and for the first
time she feels life renewed inside of her.
(weak, but eager)
Well, what do we do?
Unfortunately, I don’t have the
means – medically – here to help you.
I’ve been living on a ship, The Pequod,
and we have a medical bay. Dr. Montgomery
is there... we could go there and-
She stops upon seeing the Smoking Man shaking
his head “no”.
Is Dana Scully there?
Then I’m afraid I cannot go. I’m
sure she has moved on and I don’t
want her to have to fight off bad
memories of what I’ve done to her.
(beat) Long ago you told me that she
would never forgive me, but that she
would appreciate the sincerity of my
words. I am truly sorry for the all the
evil I ever brought upon her and her
loved one’s. Let my gesture, of not going
back to see her, be the sincerity of
my words. I’m afraid my image would just
haunt her and I do not wish to do that to her.
Monica nods her head and looks down, afraid
she’ll have to make the journey back all alone.
I will give you the chip and instructions
on what to do with it, though I’m sure
Dr. Montgomery will already know. (beat)
In your weakened state I will travel with
you and make sure you arrive safely.
She lies down, her head sinking into the pillow
and she shuts her eyes. Her mind finally at peace knowing that there
INT. HALLWAY – THE PEQUOD – THE NEXT DAY
JULY 10, 2012
Knowle and Mulder are walking slowly down one
of the many hallways of the Pequod. Knowle is in sweatpants and a
t-shirt and his hair is a mess. He looks tired and exhausted. Mulder
has his arm wrapped around his shoulders.
I know you’re going through a
rough time, buddy, and I really
meant to get this to you on your
birthday a month ago, but it wasn’t
Knowle doesn’t respond, but he’s listening.
You see, I was listening to one
of your lectures and I started to
think to myself: “Wow-wee! Knowle’s
jaw really does look like it was
chiseled by Michelangelo himself”!
So I got some mud and started to sculpt.
Knowle narrows his brow and looks at him...
what the hell has he done?
But when mud didn’t work, I happened
to be out on one of those Mulder Luck
adventures to land that I’m not supposed
to take and I struck GOLD! – Well, it wasn’t
exactly gold as it was bronze, but you know...
So I found this bronze and...
Mulder stops walking, making Knowle stop too.
They are standing in front of a closed door.
Now close your eyes.
Knowle looks at him, unsure of what he’s about
to see. But he closes his eyes.
Mulder opens the door and leads Knowle into
the room where there is a bronze, life-sized statue of Knowle.
Open your eyes.
Knowle doesn’t know what to say. Even if he
were in a better mood he wouldn’t know what to say to having a bronze
statue made of him.
You made a bronze statue of me?
Yeah, apparently, I know how
to sculpt things out of bronze.
Mulder shrugs his shoulders. Knowle nods his
head. He has no idea what he’s going to do with this... he’s heard
the stories of the gigantic teddy bears, but this bronze statue is
I know... I think I went
a bit over the top.
Mulder stands with Knowle, admiring his work
and thinking how crazy he must seem right now.
Charles Scully walks by the room, back tracks
and comes in.
I made it.
You are one strange fellow, Fox Mulder.
He turns to Knowle, who still doesn’t know how
to react to this.
Knowle, my dad’s been looking
for you. He needs to talk to
up in his quarters.
Knowle nods his head, then turns to Mulder.
Uh... Thank you... I don’t
know what to do with it, but
Mulder nods and shrugs... even he wouldn’t know
what to do with a bronze statue. Whatever in the world came over him?
I’ll see you guys around.
Knowle turns and leaves. And Charles looks at
Mulder with a somewhat disapproving look.
His wife dies and you give
him a bronze statue of himself?
I meant to give it to him
a month ago on his birthday.
Mulder leaves quickly. Sometimes his odd quirks
can be embarrassing, and his timing sure can stink.
INT. CAPTAIN SCULLY’S QUARTERS
Captain Scully has just opened his door to Knowle.
He nods and lets him in.
Charles said you needed to talk
to me. I’m sorry I haven’t been
on top of my game, sir.
No need to apologize about that.
(beat) In fact, I have some good
news for you.
Knowle doubts this and his expression shows,
but he listens.
I just got a call from Ray at
the Ice Cave. He’s bringing
Monica back. Apparently she ran
into someone who had a cure for her illness.
Knowle sits down in the nearest chair. His heart
wants to believe this, and it does, but his mind stays rational.
Her cancer has no cure. Are
we sure that she’s...
Ray ran the test – she’s Monica. He
says a man dropped her off and made
sure she got their safely, then left.
He didn’t know him. (beat) They are
on their way back. I’ve already informed
Dr. Montgomery that she’ll need him.
Knowle nods his head. He can’t believe this
until he sees it with his own eyes. How could this be? There is no
cure? He’s seen stranger things in the past, perhaps this is the work
of the good aliens that got her out of the Alien Headquarters five
When are they scheduled to arrive?
I want to be there.
Anytime now. I had some trouble
Mulder had a bronze statue of me
that he wanted to give to me.
Captain Scully shakes his head... it’s one thing
after another with that kid.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. JOHN MONTGOMERY’S LAB – SAME DAY
Monica is sitting on the exam table, eagerly
watching Montgomery examine the chip under a microscope. Knowle is
looking over his shoulder, wanting to know as much as he can about
This chip in intact. Not even a
scratch, and after all this time.
Can it cure her?
I believe it can.
Montgomery looks up from his microscope and
smiles at him. Knowle smiles a small smile, then looks over at Monica.
Both feel alive inside.
So how do we get it in me?
Montgomery carefully handles the chip as he
comes over to her. Knowle follows, but stands on the other side of
It’s a simple procedure really.
He sets the chip down on a tray and picks up
I just need to implant it in
the base of your neck with a single
cut and a single stitch.
How long until we know it works?
I’ve already got the before scan of
the mass. We’ll wait a couple days
and then take another. If it hasn’t
grown and if it’s gone dormant, then...
(he smiles) Then we’ll know.
Will I feel any different?
There is a recovery time. If you
feel sicker than you do right now
I want you to come to me right away.
(beat) Now I’ll just need you to
tilt your head forward just a bit.
Monica does as he says and he cuts the base
of her neck. She winces a bit and Knowle takes hold of her hand.
Montgomery picks up the chip and starts to place
it in the base of her neck.
Almost done... just a stitch...
He stitches the base of her neck. He smiles
when done and goes around to be face to face with her.
And we’re done.
He smiles at her.
Is there anything I shouldn’t do?
Don’t scratch it.
He gets some gauze from a cabinet and places
a bandage over the incision.
Montgomery nods his head and smiles at her.
There is another concern that we have.
(beat) When I cured Dana, I didn’t just
take her cancer... You know how after that
she was able to conceive... I uh... now I can’t.
Well I can, but... I miscarry. I don’t know if
that was from a weakened immune system or
if my body took that from her like it took the cancer.
Well, we can take a look and see
and from there... I’ll do what I
can to help.
We don’t need to do that now, let’s
first see how this works out.
Montgomery nods his head.
Then you are free to go. I’d like to
check up on you in a couple days.
Montgomery turns towards the door to leave.
Knowle follows as Monica finds her clothing so she can get out of
the hospital gown.
INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE MONTGOMERY’S LAB – CON’T
Knowle shuts the door as he leaves the room.
Thank you, John.
You’re welcome, but I’m not the
real man to thank. The man who
gave her the chip, who somehow
found my old work... he’s the one
to thank for this.
I know, but...
He smiles, nods and walks off. To Montgomery,
this is all in a days work.
Monica steps into the hallway. Knowle turns
to her and wraps his arms around her.
I thought I lost you.
You almost did.
I read your note...
The thing that will save mankind?
Monica shakes her head.
He didn’t have it, and I really
think it was Grandmama’s way of
getting me to go out there so I
could be cured.
She works in mysterious ways.
They start to walk down the hallway.
The man that had the chip... he
was that smoking man from the
facility... the one that hurt Dana.
Knowle listens, he thought that man died.
He didn’t want to come back here
because he didn’t want Dana to have
to see him again and bring up all
the horrible memories. I don’t know
if I should tell her that he’s truly
sorry for all the evil he did to her.
I don’t know... Do you think it would
help her any? Or has she already moved
on in her life that she has put it all
I don’t feel she lingers on what
he did to her. (beat) I don’t think
I should tell her. I don’t feel the need.
But if ever it should come up...
Knowle nods his head. If she ever brings it
up, then tell her. They both doubt that Dana will ever bring him up
again. John has helped her through all of that. Katie has healed her
of her dark past and her life has moved on.
(after a beat)
I’m sure you’ve already figured this,
but... everyone knows about the cancer.
They’ve all been helpful in their
own ways. John and Dana understand
your reasons for not wanting to tell them.
(looking up at Knowle)
They weren’t heart-
He shakes his head.
Their main concern was your
well being and what they could
do to help.
Do they know I’m back?
I’m sure they do. Charles found
me to let me know. Dana’s father
knew you were coming...
I’m not up to seeing everyone
right now. I’m tired.
Of course. (beat) You want to
hear something funny?
Monica smiles and leans into him as they walk.
Mulder made a bronze statue of me.
Monica looks up at him.
(did she hear him right?)
He did what?
Yeah... don’t worry, even
he thinks he went a little
over the top.
Monica shakes her head and laughs quietly.
Just wait until Krycek finds out...
he’ll be jealous in no time...
I’m sure he will.
They continue down the hallway in silence, their
hearts and spirits lifted for the first time in a long time, we...
